How to extract audio from a video
- Choose the video files, or drop them on the page.
- Keep M4A (AAC audio) or pick MP3, WAV or Ogg Opus under Format.
- Set the audio bitrate (192 kb/s is the default; WAV has none).
- Select Convert and download the audio files.
Worked example
A video named talk.mov becomes talk.m4a with AAC sound at 192 kb/s; the file list notes the audio as AAC (re-encoded). The same path to MP3 is checked in the converter's automated test, where ffprobe finds MP3 audio and no video stream.
Formats and limits
| Input | MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV, MPEG-TS |
|---|---|
| Output | M4A (AAC), MP3, WAV, Ogg Opus |
| Limits | Input files up to 4 GB are read in pieces; the converted file is built in memory, so outputs above about 2 GB may fail. Needs a browser with WebCodecs (current Chrome, Edge, Safari 17+ or Firefox 130+). Other browsers are told so before any work starts. |
| Engine | Mediabunny (WebCodecs): streams are copied when compatible, otherwise re-encoded; MP3 via a WebAssembly encoder |
Limitations
- M4A and Ogg need the browser's own AAC or Opus encoder; where one is missing the page says so, and MP3 or WAV still work.
- Surround sound is mixed down to stereo.
- Only the main audio track is extracted.
- Needs a browser with WebCodecs: current Chrome or Edge, Safari 17 or later, or Firefox 130 or later. Other browsers are told so before any work starts.
Questions
Which audio format should I pick?
M4A (AAC) is compact and plays on phones and Apple devices. MP3 plays almost everywhere. WAV is uncompressed 16-bit sound for editing. Ogg Opus gives small files, especially for speech.
Is the audio copied without re-encoding?
No. The sound is decoded and encoded again at the bitrate you choose, even when the video already has AAC audio. WAV is written as uncompressed 16-bit PCM.
Do my videos leave my device?
No. The files are read and converted in this browser, and the audio files are built in memory on your device.
