How to convert SRT to VTT

  1. Paste the SRT text, or open one or more .srt files.
  2. Keep Convert to on WebVTT.
  3. Shift the timing or change the frame rate if the subtitles are out of sync.
  4. Copy or download the .vtt file.

Worked example

The SRT cue 00:01:02,500 --> 00:01:04,000 becomes the VTT cue 00:01:02.500 --> 00:01:04.000, with the same text, as the converter's unit tests check.

Formats and limits

InputSRT
OutputVTT
EngineShared subtitle parser and serializers; encoding detection (UTF-8/UTF-16 byte-order marks, UTF-8, Windows-1252 fallback)

Limitations

  • SRT has no positioning, so the VTT cues use the player's default position.
  • Encoding detection covers UTF-8, UTF-16 and Windows-1252; files in other encodings may show wrong characters.
  • Up to 20 MB per file.

Questions

What changes between SRT and VTT?

The file gets a WEBVTT header and the milliseconds separator changes from a comma to a dot, so 00:01:02,500 becomes 00:01:02.500. Cue numbers are not needed in VTT.

Are italics kept?

Yes. Italic, bold and underline tags are kept; characters that would break WebVTT markup are escaped.

Is my subtitle file uploaded?

No. The subtitle file is read and converted in your browser.
