How to use
- Enter the floor area (or add rectangles for L-shaped rooms).
- Enter tile size and grout gap, or box coverage for planks.
- Add waste (10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal).
Worked example
A 3 × 2.4 m floor (7.2 m²) with 300 × 300 mm tiles and 3 mm gaps needs 79 tiles before waste, 87 with 10% waste.
Supported formats and limits
| Input | Area or room shapes, tile size, gap, waste %, box coverage |
|---|---|
| Output | Tiles, boxes, cost |
| Engine | Area-based estimate with per-row cut allowance |
Limitations
- Complex patterns (herringbone) need a larger waste allowance than the defaults.
Questions
How much waste should I add?
About 10% is common for a straight lay and 15% for diagonal layouts. Patterns such as herringbone, irregular rooms and fragile tiles need more. The calculator applies the percentage you choose.
How is the tile count worked out?
From the area divided by the tile size including the grout gap, rounded up. A 3 x 2.4 m floor with 300 x 300 mm tiles and 3 mm gaps needs 79 tiles before waste and 87 with 10%. It is an area estimate, not a cutting plan.
