How to convert PNG to ICO

  1. Choose the PNG files (JPEG, WebP and SVG work too).
  2. Keep Format on ICO and tick the icon sizes you need.
  3. Select Convert to ICO.
  4. Download the .ico files, or all of them as a ZIP.

Worked example

logo.png becomes logo.ico with four PNG entries, 16, 32, 48 and 256 px, stored smallest first; the entry order and the way 256 px is recorded are checked in the converter's unit tests.

Questions

Which sizes should an ICO file have?

For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 px. For a Windows desktop or app icon, add 256 px. You can tick 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256.

What if my PNG is not square?

Each size is a square. A wider or taller image is centered on a transparent background, so nothing is cut off.

Do I need a full favicon set instead?

For an apple-touch-icon, web manifest icons and the HTML tags as well, use the favicon generator, which writes a favicon.ico along with them.
