How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. Choose the WebP images.
  2. Keep Format on PNG and leave the PNG optimization checkbox on for smaller files.
  3. Select Convert to PNG.
  4. Download the PNG files, or all of them as a ZIP.

Worked example

In the converter's automated test, a lossless WebP is recognized by its content and converted to PNG in the same batch as six other formats, and the results download together as one ZIP.

Formats and limits

InputWebP
OutputPNG
LimitsUp to 50 MB and 50 megapixels per image; 200 images per batch.
EngineDecoders: browser, UTIF (TIFF), libheif (HEIC). Encoders: MozJPEG, OxiPNG, libwebp, libavif (jSquash WASM), gifenc, UTIF; all in a Web Worker

Limitations

  • Animated WebP files give a still PNG of the first frame.
  • PNG files of photos are larger than the WebP originals.
  • Up to 50 MB and 50 megapixels per image, 200 images per batch.

Questions

Does the PNG keep the WebP's transparency?

Yes. PNG stores transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent areas come through as they are.

What happens to an animated WebP?

Only the first frame is converted, so the PNG is a still image.

Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?

PNG is lossless, so a photo stored as lossy WebP grows when converted. Converting does not bring back detail the WebP left out.
